If Hillary Clinton had been elected

Posted

On this day last year I wrote two editorials in anticipation of the 2016 presidential election results, each reflecting the possible outcome. The one concerning a presidency under Hillary Clinton never ran, of course. However, I thought it would be interesting for you to read it here, the editorial I've never posted, until now.

One year ago when Donald Trump was elected president of the United States many people were taken by surprise. When I was driving to work on Tuesday morning, Nov. 8, 2016 I had a strong notion Donald Trump was going to win the election and become the 45th president of the nation.

I even walked into the office and told Donna Ward, my administrative assistant, “Donald Trump is going to win the election today.”

However, I was not so dead certain that I was willing to put all my eggs into the Trump basket. So, that day I wrote two editorials: one if Trump was elected and one if Hillary Clinton was elected. I wanted to be sure to cover all my bases.

I gave both editorials to Scott Barkley, our web content editor, and told him I would call or text him and let him know which one to post as the election results became clear. When Pennsylvania sealed the victory for Donald Trump at 2:40 a.m. on Nov. 9, most of the networks announced he was the winner. I texted Scott and asked him to post the editorial on Mr. Trump and he did almost immediately.

The editorial on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s supposed victory has been taking up space in our computer trashcan for one year. However, we thought you might like to read it and reflect on what life in America would be like if she had been elected as our president. Here is the link.

That is an illustration of how current and relevant we want to be at The Christian Index. Since there are only three on our staff who write stories for the publication, it is sometimes difficult to be as current as we would like to be. But we are trying hard to get the news out to you in a timely fashion.

When we were offering a print edition of The Index we published every two weeks. Sometimes the news you received from us was more like history than news. We try to put new stories or commentaries on our website every day. It is not easy, but we are still working hard to make The Index as relevant and current as possible.

When we stopped our print edition we were sending the paper to approximately 22,000 subscribers. Hopefully, most of those who received the paper in the mail were reading it, but we cannot be sure. Now, we are averaging almost 75,000 page views a month and believe we will soon be having one million page views a year.

Because of the sophisticated analytical information available to us we are able to tell how many readers we have each minute, which stories/commentaries they read, how long they stay on each page, and the towns and cities where they live and much more.

We have learned we have a substantial number of readers in out-of-state cities like Nashville, Birmingham, Dallas, Orlando and even Boston. We also have a significant number of readers from other countries, including Canada, India, England, Kenya, India, and the Philippines.

The transition from a print edition to an exclusively online edition has been challenging and certainly requires much more work, but I think it was a wise and prudent decision. You can help us greatly by encouraging your fellow church members and friends to subscribe to our publication and go to our website, look on the right side of the homepage where it says “Subscribe For Email Updates!” and provide the information requested. Click "Submit" and you will get the latest digital edition of The Christian Index in your mailbox twice a week.
