Obituary: Raymond Coleman, pastor and associational mission strategist, dies at 69

Rev. Raymond S. Coleman, Jr., age 69, of Douglas, Georgia went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Vista Park Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided since his failing health.

He was born into the world on March 9, 1955, in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Raymond S. Coleman, Sr. and Mrs. Laverne Williams Coleman. Rev. Coleman was a retired minister in the Southern Baptist Association and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

He received his undergraduate degree from Mercer University then went on to study at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky where he obtained his PhD. While in Louisville he met and married the love of his life, Glennis M. Cleveland, who shared his ministry for 44 years until her death earlier this year. Together Rev. and Mrs. Coleman had one son, Chris Coleman.

Rev. Coleman pastored several churches during his ministry, including: Friendship Baptist Church in Doerun, Georgia; Bethel Baptist Church in Americus, Georgia; Graham Baptist Church in San Jacinto, Indiana; Union Baptist Church in Pitts, Georgia. In the latter days of his ministry, he served as Associational Missionary of the Smyrna Baptist Association and also taught math classes at South Georgia State College for several years. Rev. Coleman loved the Lord with all his heart, was a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, had a great love for history and education, and was a train enthusiast.

Rev. Coleman leaves behind to cherish his memory his mother, Laverne Williams Coleman of Americus, Georgia, and his son, Chris Coleman of Lilburn, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glennis M. Cleveland Coleman, and his father, Raymond S. Coleman, Sr.

Rev. Coleman’s family will receive friends on Friday, August 2, 2024 from 7:00-9:00 PM at Ricketson Funeral Home, Inc. His life and ministry will be honored by a funeral on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Northside Baptist Church in Douglas, Georgia with Rev. Kenneth White officiating. Burial will follow in the Douglas City Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife.
