SBC missionary Dorotha "Dot" Lott dies Aug. 4 in Waycross

WAYCROSS — Dorotha Del "Dot" Lott, retired SBC missionary, 82, died Aug. 4th under hospice care at Baptist Village.

Born June 14, 1935 in Sumrall, MS, she was oldest daughter of Edgar A. and Lola Murray Lott. She was preceded in death by them and her younger sister, Jo Ellen. Growing up in Sumrall and Hattiesburg, MS, the family moved to Savannah in 1952 and she graduated from Commercial High School. She accepted Christ and was baptized in Oloh Baptist Church, near Sumrall. She later moved to Savannah.

As a young adult she taught youth and studied missions while also performing secretarial duties in Bull Street Baptist Church and Ardsley Park Baptist Church, both in Savannah. These churches supported her call to missionary service and educational preparation at Tift College at Forsyth, where she graduated in 1962. She then entered Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, graduating with a  Master of Religious Education degree in 1964.

She was appointed by the International Mission Board for service in South Brazil; arriving in Sao Paulo in September, 1964. Her assignments included secretarial duties in the mission offices in Rio de Janeiro and Brazila; youth evangelism and education in Goinia region; concluding as Professor of Christian Education and Dean of Women in Goias Baptist Theological Seminary in Goinia until 2000.

Returning to the U. S. she spoke in several churches, sharing her faith and work in Associational Schools of Mission throughout the SBC until her retirement in 2001. Dot move to Baptist Village in July, 2006 enjoying independent and assisted living until May, 2016, when she entered nursing care with dementia. She donated her body to the Medical College of Georgia in  Augusta.

She is survived by nephews Brian (Delaira) Lowden of Spring, TX and Greg (Robin) Lowden of Willis, TX and niece Kim (John) Palasota of Willis, TX; and several cousins around Hattiesburg, MS. She is also grieved by her family of faith in Savannah Baptist Association.

A memorial service was held at Bull Street Baptist Church on August 11.
