"Considering the environment and the times in which they issued a statement, it was a bold statement . . . But these ministers were more courageous than white ministers generally are today.” – Civil Rights leader Rev. Joseph Lowery reflecting on the white ministers who published the 1957 Atlanta Ministers' Manifesto.

Set and then smash your goals

One of the most disappointing days of my life came immediately after accomplishing my greatest goal. I had just successfully completed the US Army’s Best Ranger Competition.

What Southern Baptist journalism has proven over the years is that our readers are hungry for news about their missionaries. They want to know details about where they’re serving, what’s it like there, and what kinds of difficulties they are encountering.

Just a couple weeks ago a hearing was held in the Georgia Senate regarding the legalization of recreational marijuana. Though no vote was taken on the legislation, the most striking element of the hearing was the numerous negative comments from the Senate committee members and those who testified against the legislation.

Danielle Cobo has an amazing story. This woman’s life story reads like an action movie script: kidnapped as a baby, met her father at age 15, and lost her mother to suicide.

I recently went on a mission trip to Ecuador with pastors from two churches in the West Central Region of Georgia. I volunteer as a virtual strategy coordinator with the GA Baptist Mission Board. As …

The lights had just come on for the intermission of my daughter’s spring musical when we got the news.  In response to the risk associated with the new virus her school was transitioning to remote learning and all extracurricular activities were cancelled, including the performances of her last high school musical production.

What happened down in Moultrie this week should serve as a reminder about how incredibly gifted the people at the Georgia Baptist Mission Board are.

I was sitting in a church on a recent Wednesday night listening to the pastor teach an in-depth Bible lesson. All of a sudden there was a tangential discussion on people’s hair and bald-headedness. That is when the pastor injected a comment about Elisha cursing some children who had taunted him, and how they were then attacked and mauled by two bears.

I wanted to take a moment to give a birthday shoutout to an incredible friend, one who has proven invaluable to generations of Georgia Baptists.

Best Pastors Day at the Capitol ever

What an awesome day it was at the 8th Annual Georgia Baptist Pastors Day at the State Capitol. Nearly 160 pastors, ministry leaders, laypeople, and legislators gathered on Feb. 27 to be inspired and encouraged to understand the political process from a Christian perspective.

Shannon Labrie knows what it means to hustle.  She grew up on a small farm in the Midwestern US. Farming communities large and small are marked by their incredible work ethic. Hustle and hard work grows something deep in a person that just cannot bear fruit any other way.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) — As believers, most of us know that our faith is not something to be kept to ourselves. Jesus commanded us to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.”

It’s amazing to me that people from 187 countries have read stories in The Christian Index over the past month.

For more than seven years the Georgia General Assembly has been dealing with the issue of expanding gambling in Georgia. Every year the proposed legislation has failed to pass out of the House and the Senate.

Change Church - Miracles in messy places

GRANTVILLE – In Luke 7: 43-50 Jesus tells a beautiful story about a woman who apparently had a sordid past, but who came to Christ and was forgiven.

The deception of the abortion movement

A couple of weeks ago The Augusta Press ran an article of mine concerning Faith and Choice.  There was a lot of good response to that article which took the common sense approach to one of the most discussed subjects of our day: abortion.

Faith and choice

I suppose that there has never been an issue which divided our nation like the issue of abortion.

As we approach the legislative session getting underway in Atlanta, we are beginning the second year of a two-year legislative cycle. This means bills that did not pass last year are still available for consideration this year.

Let me begin by saying that I am a U.S. citizen by choice. Even though I was born in Peru, the U.S. gave me an education, and for that I will always be grateful.

Time to remember the sanctity of human life

The late President Ronald Reagan, a champion for pro-life causes, proclaimed January 22 of each year would be set aside as National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

The New Year brings the opportunity to start fresh and create a plan for the months ahead. It gives us each a chance to look at our past year and see what worked, what didn’t, where God showed up, and what He spoke to us in our struggles, strengths, losses and victories.

The Georgia Baptist Pastors Day at the state Capitol is happening Thursday, January 27, 2022!
