ATLANTA, Ga. – Decking the halls in Georgia’s state Capitol involves lots of garlands, bows, Poinsettias and an enormous evergreen sparkling with thousands of lights.
People will be able to get a closeup look at the holiday décor during a series of Christmas prayer tours led the by Georgia Baptist Mission Board’s public affairs representative, Mike Griffin, beginning on Wednesday.
Griffin will encourage people who sign up for the tours to look beyond the glitter of the season and see the spiritual needs of the elected officials and policymakers who work in the Capitol.
“Our prayer tour is designed to give participants the opportunity to be informed about what happens at the Capitol and to pray for those who are making public policy decisions,” Griffin said.
The two-hour tours are set for December 8, 9, and 16 and will begin at 10 a.m. each day. Registration is required and is limited to the first 25 people who sign up for each day.
“We will make our way through each of the four floors of the Capitol, making a number of stops along the way,” Griffin said. “I’ll describe what goes on in the various parts of the Capitol, from the Governor’s Office to the legislative offices and committee rooms to the House and Senate chambers.”
Each stop will provide a time of prayer for Georgia’s political leaders as they prepare for a legislative session that begins in January.
“That’s crucial,” Griffin said, “because we understand that God uses prayer to make a difference.”
Griffin said the tours are spiritual but also educational, because it’s vital that Georgia Baptists understand the issues and the processes at play in the Capitol.
“You can’t really pray effectively about issues you don’t know anything about, and you can’t pray effectively for people if you don’t know who they are,” he said. “That’s why the educational component is so important.”
