CLEVELAND – Three students from the Truett McConnell University Pilgram Marpeck School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will present their senior research capstone project at the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) annual conference on Feb. 16 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Senior exercise science majors Devonte Upshaw, Hannah Wall, and Jakaree Garrison will present their research project entitled "Does the 30-Day Push-Up Challenge Build Upper Body Muscle Strength" at the upcoming conference under the advisement of Jeremiah Lukers, assistant professor of exercise science.

Students, faculty scientists, private industry practitioners, and clinical professionals from all over the southeastern United States conduct research projects and analyze data to present results at the conference exposing them to the exercise science/allied health profession.

“This is the first group of exercise science majors from TMU to participate at SEACSM, so this event is a step in the right direction to expand our program and share our story,” said Lukers. “With these types of public presentations, we are breaking barriers and promoting the value of a private Christian education.”

As part of the exercise science degree program, students have learned and reviewed statistical and research methods, conducted literature reviews on a certain topic, and helped to create and provide this research on the topic at hand. Each student collected data, performed testing on study participants, and then analyzed results to discuss importance of their research project.

“I am looking forward to presenting in hopes that Truett McConnell’s exercise science program gets national recognition,” Garrison said.
