ATLANTA – The state Board of Education adopted a new set of “Georgia-grown” standards for English/language arts (ELA) instruction in public schools Thursday, the last step in abandoning the federal standards known as Common Core.

(AP) — The remains of two people found on a farm near the Chattahoochee River in March have been positively identified as two Georgia friends and business partners who went missing in February. ATLANTA – A planned “inland port” in Gainesville designed to reduce traffic congestion on Georgia highways has gotten a green light from the feds. The Georgia Ports Authority has received National Environmental Policy Act approval to move forward with plans to build a rail hub along the Interstate 85/I-985 corridor that will take in containerized cargo shipped by freight rail from the Port of Savannah and transfer the containers to trucks.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia workers at one of the nation's largest school bus manufacturers will begin voting Thursday on whether they want to be represented by a labor union. More than 1,400 employees at Blue Bird Corp.'s two factories and warehouse in Fort Valley will be voting through Friday on whether they want to unionize under the banner of the United Steelworkers. That union represents more than 850,000 workers nationwide in a variety of industries.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia remains on track for another budget surplus, even after the state's tax revenues fell in April. The state has collected $27.8 billion in General Fund revenue through April, according to figures released Tuesday by Gov. Brian Kemp. That's only about 1% more than last year, with revenue growth slowing down after running red hot during the pandemic.

MOULTRIE, Ga. (AP) — A man recorded by a security camera fatally shooting his manager Thursday at a fast food restaurant in rural south Georgia is also suspected of killing his mother and grandmother at their nearby homes before taking his own life, authorities said.

The award against Silicon Ranch Corp. and its contractor, IEA Inc., was announced Friday by James E. Butler, attorney for plaintiffs Shaun and Amie Harris who live near Lumpkin, Georgia, south of Columbus, WRBL-TV reported.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Construction crews had placed “insufficient support” beneath part of an upper floor that collapsed during renovations on the 124-year-old federal courthouse in Savannah, according to the government agency overseeing the project. Three construction workers were injured April 11 when a section of the courthouse's third floor gave out, causing them to fall to the floor below.

ATLANTA – Gov. Brian Kemp has signed a fishing rights bill the General Assembly passed in the waning seconds of this year’s session. Senate Bill 115, which the governor inked late Monday, guarantees Georgians’ right to fish in navigable portions of the state’s rivers and streams.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The first Delta CJR-900 landed Monday morning, marking the beginning of a new era at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport. The new jets are larger than the ones Delta had been providing for flights to Atlanta. First-class seating from the Golden Isles was provided for the first time. John Duncan, the airport’s operations coordinator, said the CJR-900 has 76 seats, including 12 first-class seats, which were sold out for the inaugural flight.

ELLABELL, Ga. (AP) — A construction worker died after falling from a structure at the sprawling site where Hyundai is building an electric vehicle plant in Georgia, officials said. Hyundai Motor Group said in a statement the death happened Saturday when a worker fell from a three-story structure in the area of the plant’s paint shop. Initial information indicates part of the worker's safety harness failed, the company said.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's state government will for the first time run its own marketplace for individual health insurance under a law that Gov. Brian Kemp signed Tuesday. The governor said during a ceremony at the state Capitol that the law would create a better way for people “knowing and comparing their health care insurance options” and bring “further competition to the field. Georgians know their needs and those of their families best,” he said.

ATLANTA (AP) — A new reactor at a nuclear power plant in Georgia has completed a key testing phase, getting one step closer to generating electricity. Georgia Power Co. said Monday that the fourth reactor at Plant Vogtle, southeast of Augusta, has completed what is called hot functional testing. Such testing involves heating up the reactor to the extreme pressure and temperature required to split atoms.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday that the first of a projected $1 billion of state income tax refunds have been issued. The plan, approved overwhelmingly by the General Assembly under House Bill 162, gives a refund of up to $250 to single filers, up to $375 to single adults who head a household with dependents and up to $500 to married couples filing jointly.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — The water is running and safe to drink again in a central Georgia city after a broken pump left the city unable to pump enough water for residents. Milledgeville announced Saturday that a boil-water advisory is no longer in effect after lab tests showed that the city's water supply is safe for human consumption. The city of 17,000 earlier restored water pressure, but had to test the water before lifting the order to boil.
