COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Shane Beamer is focused on the field, not on Georgia’s No. 1 ranking. He might be the only one heading into Saturday’s game. Beamer told his staff no “shock the worlds” or other rah-rah platitudes around the team this week. Then his family sent him several texts saying just that.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Atlanta United forward Thiago Almada has been included in Argentina’s 28-man squad for two World Cup warm-up matches to be played in the United States this month. The team will face Honduras on Sept. 23 in Miami and Jamaica four days later in New Jersey. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni dropped four players from his earlier list: goalkeeper Juan Musso, defender Lucas Martínez, midfielder Exequiel Palacios and striker Nicolás González — the latter two are injured.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons running back Damien Williams was held out of practice for the second consecutive day with a rib injury. Williams' status is uncertain for Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Rams. Williams had been expected to share carries with Falcons starter Cordarrelle Patterson. Instead, Williams had only two carries for 2 yards before suffering the injury on Atlanta’s second possession of last week’s 27-26 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

ATLANTA (AP) — Three weeks into the season, No. 20 Ole Miss is still sorting things out at quarterback. Maybe Saturday’s game at Georgia Tech will provide some clarity. Luke Altmyer started last week against Central Arkansas but went down with an upper-body injury. He appears fully recovered and should be able to go against the Yellow Jackets.

Roger Federer has announced that he is retiring from professional tennis at the age of 41 after winning 20 Grand Slam titles. Federer has not competed since Wimbledon in July 2021. He has had a series of knee operations. Federer posted his news on Twitter. He says his farewell event will be the Laver Cup in London next week.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Carlos Rodón struck out eight in five dominant innings before leaving with a blister and the San Francisco Giants slowed down the Atlanta Braves 4-1 to win the series. Rodón improved to 13-8. He allowed just an unearned run on two hits and a walk. He moved into second in the majors with 220 strikeouts, behind only New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, who has 228.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Oklahoma’s regular-season games against Southeastern Conference teams will have to wait until the Sooners are officially a member. The SEC says it has instructed Georgia and Tennessee to postpone home-and-home games scheduled for the next two seasons. The second meetings with both teams were scheduled for after Oklahoma and Texas leave the Big 12 and start playing in the SEC in 2025.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Thiago Almada scored in the 72nd minute and Raul Gudino stopped three shots as Atlanta United beat Orlando City 1-0 on Wednesday night. Orlando's loss clinched a playoff berth for the New York Red Bulls, the team's 13th consecutive postseason appearance.

The Gamecocks will be without starters in linebacker Mo Kaba and defensive end Jordan Strachan. Both suffered knee injuries at Arkansas that will keep them out for the year.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kyle Wright earned his major league-leading 18th victory and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1 to gain ground on the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. Wright had four strikeouts as he won his fifth straight decision. Dansby Swanson hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the third and Michael Harris II added an RBI single later that inning to support Wright.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rookie starter Spencer Strider struck out nine over five innings but allowed a season-high nine hits as his winning streak ended at four, and the Atlanta Braves missed a chance to gain ground in the NL East, losing to the San Francisco Giants 3-2. The first-place Mets fell 5-2 at home to the Cubs earlier and lead the defending World Series champions by 1 1/2 games.

Atlanta finally passed the New York Mets this past week. Then the Braves ran into their mirror image from the American League. That would be the Seattle Mariners. They took two of three from the Braves and are now 50-22 in their last 72 games. Atlanta has played at an even better clip. The Braves are 64-26 since the start of June.

Georgia has reclaimed the top spot in The Associated Press college football poll and Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Arkansas moved into the top 10 after an upset-filled weekend. The defending national champion Bulldogs started the season at No. 3 in the AP Top 25. It took them two weeks to get back to where they spent most of last year. Georgia received 53 of 63 first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama, which needed a late field goal to hold off Texas, received nine first-place votes and No. 3 Ohio State got one.

ATLANTA (AP) — A crucial red-zone fumble by Marcus Mariota spoiled his debut as Atlanta’s starter and set up another blown big lead for the Falcons. The loss provided a painful reminder of Atlanta’s past as it tries to launch a new era with Mariota at quarterback. The Falcons led 23-10 when Mariota lost a fumble at the Saints 5 in the third quarter. The Falcons were outscored 17-3 from there and lost their season opener 27-26.

ATLANTA (AP) — Wil Lutz kicked a 51-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining to cap a stunning fourth-quarter comeback by the New Orleans Saints. They overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 27-26 in coach Dennis Allen’s debut. After struggling offensively through most of the season opener, Jamies Winston guided the Saints to three straight scoring drives.

SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez each hit their second home run of the game, connecting in the ninth inning and rallying the Seattle Mariners over the Atlanta Braves 8-7. The Braves trailed 6-2 going into the ninth, but Michael Harris II and Robbie Grossman hit two-out homers during a five-run comeback.

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the U.S. Open final to earn his first Grand Slam title at age 19 and become the youngest man to move up to No. 1 in the rankings. Alcaraz is a Spaniard who was appearing in his eighth major tournament and second at Flushing Meadows.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A shutout win wasn't enough for a No. 2 Georgia coming off its impressive opener when it scored touchdowns on its first seven offensive possessions. The reigning national champions fell short of that lofty standard against FCS Samford.

Dansby Swanson hit one of Atlanta’s four home runs and the World Series champion Braves grabbed sole possession of first place for the first time all season with a 6-4 victory over the Seattle …

ATLANTA (AP) — When Georgia State moved into the ballpark formerly known as Turner Field, it was hoping for a day such as this. A Power Five opponent taking the field at the Panthers’ house. North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference will be in Atlanta on Saturday to face Georgia State. The Tar Heels are the first team from one of college football’s major conferences to face the Sun Belt Conference Panthers in their stadium.

NEW YORK (AP) — Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur will face each other in the U.S. Open women's final. Tunisia's Jabeur reached her second consecutive Grand Slam title match by beating Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows on Thursday night. The No. 5-seeded Jabeur was the runner-up at Wimbledon in July. She took full advantage of a shaky performance by first-time major semifinalist Garcia. The No. 1-ranked Swiatek grabbed the last four games to eliminate No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (BP) – Ouachita Baptist University senior Clark Yarbrough, a 21-year-old starting defensive lineman on the school’s football team, died Sunday morning after a sudden collapse. University staff provided immediate emergency assistance, and, following additional measures by emergency responders and other medical professionals, he was pronounced dead at Baptist Health Medical Center in Arkadelphia.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Chris Hatcher has good reason to feel proud of Kirby Smart’s success in bringing a national championship to Georgia. After all, Hatcher gave Smart his first coaching job. Smart will face his former boss when No. 2 Georgia plays Samford, coached by Hatcher, in its first home game since winning last season’s national title. Hatcher was Valdosta State’s coach when he hired Smart to coach defensive backs in 2000.
